Arlene Cardenas – Marjolaine
1. What is you background and when did you know that you wanted to open up shop for yourself?
When I was a teenager, I lived across the street from Marjolaine. I ended up working there just thinking it was going to be a fun way to make a bit of money and learn a couple new things. Little did I know it was going to end up becoming my everything! After working at Marjolaine for a while and moving up in positions, I knew that one day I wanted to own Marjolaine and be the boss. When the previous owner, Rusty, decided it was time for him to move on, I knew it was my chance to make my dreams come true. As of now, I have been the owner of Marjolaine for 7 years!
2. Why was New Haven your choice? How has the clientele and city treated you thus far?
Marjolaine has been in New Haven for 45 years, so the obvious choice is to keep it where it all started! I plan on keeping Marjolaine in New Haven until I can’t. Luckily everyone in New Haven has been so kind. I have plenty of loyal customers that always make my days when they come in and I get to meet new people everyday!
3. Why do you think it’s important to remain open during this tough time and support the community?
I think it’s important to support small businesses during these tough times. Nearly all small businesses make all of their money from people in their community. It’s also crucial to tip your servers, food delivery drivers and basically anyone you can tip. A lot of these people make their living off of tips and especially now in these rough times it is important to show them our support! Also, there are plenty of other ways to support these businesses without even making a purchase. It can be as simple as liking their posts and sharing their pages. Even that little click of a button can make a huge difference.
4. What is a recommendation from your menu you’d give to people who aren’t familiar with Marjolaine and want to try it out?
If you have never been to Marjolaine Pastry Shop, I recommend you try our Fresh Fruit Tart! It is a delicious pastry with an almond tart base, vanilla pastry cream and fresh fruit on top! Just keep in mind it had nuts, so to anyone with an allergy I would recommend trying the Flourless Chocolate Cake with whipped cream, it is also gluten free!
